What is Sleep Apnea?

sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that affects breathing during sleep. It occurs when the airway collapses or becomes blocked, preventing air from entering your lungs. People with sleep apnea experience pauses in their breathing during sleep, which can last for 10 seconds or longer and happen as often as 30 times per hour. These pauses can cause disruption in sleep, which can lead to daytime fatigue and a number of other health problems.

Symptoms

Some signs that you may have sleep apnea are:

  • Snoring
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Waking up feeling tired or unrefreshed

Good sleep is important to your overall health and wellness. It is important to see your doctor for a diagnosis if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms.

Treatment

Some individuals are able to effectively treat sleep apnea with certain lifestyle changes, such as dieting, exercising, or avoiding alcohol and sleeping medications. Others may need more serious treatment for their sleep apnea. Mouthpieces, such as CPAP masks or oral appliances, can be used to help keep the airway open during sleep. For more severe cases, surgery may be required.
